Sarah Trigg

exhibition
august 2007

curated by ladyfest bristol

historically women have been placed within the domestic sphere, in the role of nurturer and servant. the inspiration behind the exhibition in Kino was women’s place in the kitchen, and what this has meant for women’s position in society. sarah trigg has created a series of plates with transfers exploring women’s positions and how women’s roles have been perceived in society. sarah will be using the plates both as display pieces, and to use in the café, challenging perceptions of what art and objects mean to us.

sarah trigg lives and works in bristol. she graduated from bath spa University in 2002 with a degree in fine art. sarah’s work deals with issues surrounding identity and how we attribute value to objects and people. this interest in our sense of self-worth has inspired her to use found objects in her work that are charged with hidden histories, memories and significance.

sembrando desarrigo
sowing displacement
images of colombia
lara coleman

sembrando desarraigo - sewing displacement brings you stories from the epicentre of globalisation.

in colombia the interests of transnational corporations are imposed through violence. state-linked paramilitaries drive communities from their land to clear the ground for mega-projects, and attack unionised workers whose insistence on decent conditions constrains the unfettered pursuit of profit. meanwhile, the police repress student protests and attempt to clear land occupations of people already displaced by the violence.

despite this repression, people continue to resist and to engage in creative pursuit of alternatives to corporate globalisation. peasant farmers refuse to cede control over food production to transnational corporations, whilst urban communities insist on access to public services like health, education and drinking water.

lara coleman is a bristol-based photographer who is doing a phd on resistance to corporate globalisation in colombia and the uk.

the exhibition is supported by espacio bristol-colombia, a solidarity collective run entirely by volunteers, which along with colombia solidarity campaign in the uk, forms part of the european network of friendship and solidarity with colombia (red europea de hermandad y solidaridad con colombia). they invite people with skills in organising, translating or fundraising and artists of all abilities
who would like to contribute to get in touch. email espaciobristol@redcolombia.org

limited edition prints of the photographs in this exhibition are available to purchase for a minimum donation of £30. all proceeds will be used to help cover the costs of campaigning activities of the espacio bristol-colombia and projects featured in the exhibition.
