paint by numbers

currated by amy spencer

Cafe Kino celebrates the do-it-yourself art craze of the 1950s with an exhibition of vintage paint by numbers paintings. We revisit the stay-within-the-lines approach to art and look at the kits that promised to make anyone an artist.

The collection focuses on landscapes, which naively document the nostalgia for American open spaces in a changing post-war age. Scenes of hunters, deer, farms, forests and rivers are depicted in a distinctive rustic style to be hung on the walls of suburban homes.

This exhibition of unoriginal art looks at the divide that began to emerge between popular culture and the elite art world and at the place of art in everyday lives
