Cafe Kino is a not-for-profit, and completely unfunded, arts space.

We are committed to supporting DIY arts and grassroots activism, and aim to work with promoters, groups, organisations, and individuals who share the qualities, outlooks and values that are important to us.

The events side of Cafe Kino (as well as other areas of the co-op) rely heavily on the voluntary time and effort given by our staff, who work hard to bring you a programme that we are very proud of.

ACCESSIBILITY

We are proud to be an all-ages venue. There are no age restrictions on any events at Cafe Kino unless otherwise stated.

The main entrance to the cafe is step-free and on the ground floor. However, most events take place in the basement area. Unfortunately, due to building restrictions, this space is only accessible by
stairs.

Jack Lewis' Awkward Energy

+ Two White Cranes

Cafe Kino is very proud to be hosting the official album launch show for both Jack 'Lesser' Lewis' Awkward Energy and The Middle Ones! Both bands have brand new albums out now on the wonderful, Bristol-based, Stitch-Stitch label.

JACK LEWIS, often seen playing bass alongside older brother Jeffrey, hails from the same New York DIY scene that spawned The Moldy Peaches and the 'anti-folk' genre. Now living in Portland, Oregon, he returns to these shores fresh from touring as part of Jeffrey Lewis and the Junk Yard, with an album of ramshakle spikey pop hits that sees him collaborating with friends from Herman Düne, The Fisherman Three and Schwervon as THE AWKWARD ENERGY.

A conversation with the pushy-neighborhood cat, a haunted library, trying to get some friends to dance on new years day, the dangers and joys of nature, and the confusing beginnings of a relationship. These are some of the stories that appear on the new stitch-stitch release, Lvov Swims the Willamette, reflecting Jack’s constant, restless exploratory nature. Lvov Swims The Willamette is a continuation of Lewis’ Lvov Cycle which includes Lvov’s Lament (2002), Lvov Reads His Notes (2004) and Lvov Goes To Emandee (2006). Jack has also collaborated with Herman Düne on numerous albums including their newest, Strange Moosic. Since 2001 he has toured the world with the likes of Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, The Vaselines, The Mountain Goats, The Cribs and The Thermals, and was was part of the supergroup, The Bundles, on K Records which includes Jeff Lewis, Kimya Dawson and Karl Blau.

We are really pleased to welcome back to Kino one of our favourite bands, THE MIDDLE ONES, our resident artists of last year. Anna Knowles (guitar and singing) and Grace Denton (percussion/accordian and singing), both from the north of england, met whilst studying in Norwich in 2006. They have since developed strong links with Bristol, where Grace now lives, and where they recorded their two albums for stitch-stitch, It Is The Rehearsal That Will Make This and the brand new Slow and Steady, with producer and all-round creative force of nature Michal William.

Having recently toured with Best Friends Forever (Plan-It-X) and Ace Bushy Striptease (Discount Horse/Odd Box), The Middle Ones have also been busy developing a stage show with poet and playwright Molly Naylor, which they will be taking to the Edinburgh Festival this summer. A steadily-growing audience of devotees have been discovering, it is practically impossible not to be moved by The Middle Ones' delicately beautiful music and perfectly placed harmonies. On record they are haunting, intimate and sonically playful, incorporating spacious arrangements, echoes and discord; on stage they can switch from heartache to glee and back effortlessly, taking everyone in the room with them, spellbound, losing none of the rapport found in tender confidences and giddy acquaintance - disarmingly simple, honest and unassuming.
